Injury Update: Cubs Activate Carl Edwards Jr, Option Dillon Maples
The Cubs have activated Carl Edwards Jr. from the 10-day DL and he’ll be available for Friday’s game with the Reds. Edwards hasn’t pitched for the Cubs since May 29 and was placed on the DL the following day with right shoulder inflammation.
He made three rehab appearances with AAA Iowa, though he was limited to two-thirds of an inning in each and never threw more than 20 pitches. The righty allowed a total of two hits and walked four across two innings of work, though he also struck out three.
The control issues are a little concerning, but Edwards displayed good break on the curveball and had his typical mid-90’s velocity on display. Joe Maddon will no doubt take it easy with his setup man as he works to keep the pair of Edwards and Brandon Morrow fresh and healthy down the stretch.
In order to make room on the roster, Dillon Maples was optioned back to Iowa.
