Cubs Acquire C Bobby Wilson from Minnesota for Chris Gimenez

If at first you don’t succeed with one Twins catcher, try, try again. The Cubs announced Thursday that they had acquired Bobby Hill from Minnesota in exchange for Chris Gimenez and either a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Wilson was placed on the 10-day DL with a sprained right ankle on August 24 and he’ll remain there for the time being, but the Cubs had to DFA Cory Mazzoni to make room on the 40-man roster. The 35-year-old backstop has a career .208 (185-for-888) average over 371 games in parts of nine major league seasons, so the Cubs obviously didn’t get him for his bat.

We’ll surely see the glove-first Wilson in Chicago once his DL time expires, particularly as Joe Maddon seeks to rest Willson Contreras more frequently for the playoff run. This probably isn’t a difference-making move by any stretch, but it at least gives the Cubs a catcher who’s familiar with Cubs pitching coach Jim Hickey and who can handle the veteran staff on short notice.
