Javy Báez Finishes Second in NL MVP Voting, Christian Yelich Near-Unanimous Winner
The MVP winners were announced Thursday evening, and Christian Yelich took home the honors for the National League. Yelich received all but one of the 30 first-place votes, with the lone outlier going to Jacob deGrom. Javy Báez tallied the most second-place votes of any candidate, finishing with 250 total points. The top 5 was rounded out by Nolan Arenado (203), Freddie Freeman (174) and deGrom (141).
While this announcement isn’t particularly surprising given the way the NL Central race played out and Yelich’s overall stat line, it’s still disappointing Javy won’t be bringing home the hardware. He may not be the National League MVP, but El Mago was certainly the Cubs MVP in 2018 in a season that won’t soon be forgotten.
2018 NL MVP: Christian Yelich.
