Cubs Roster Moves: Russell and Montgomery Added to Roster, Zobrist to Restricted List, Strop to IL
While we all could have lingered in the joyous aftermath of Kris Bryant‘s walk-off home run for longer, the Cubs got back to business Wednesday afternoon. Addison Russell and Mike Montgomery were added to the MLB roster, taking the spots of Ben Zobrist and Pedro Strop.
Zobrist, who was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup for personal reasons, has been placed on the restricted list for the same thing. Strop heads to the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Unfortunately, that is the same hamstring that Strop injured last season in Washington, so hopefully this is just a minor setback.
As it relates to Zobrist, the difference between the restricted list and the bereavement list is an important distinction here. With the restricted list, there is no timetable for a return and it opens up a 40-man roster spot temporarily. We have not heard further word on the situation Zobrist is dealing with, but I sincerely hope all is well with him and his family.
Mike Montgomery rejoins the team after posting a 3.38 ERA in 16 innings for the Iowa Cubs this season, holding batters to a .125 batting average.
