Adbert Alzolay Option, Other Roster Moves Likely Tuesday
The Cubs are expected to make multiple roster moves Tuesday, headlined by Adbert Alzolay being optioned back to Triple-A. That’s got nothing to do with his disastrous start in Pittsburgh Monday and everything to do with the Cubs not needing an extra starter with a rare Friday break coming up. This allows them to bring up a fresh arm after after a pair of abbreviated starts while also letting Alzolay to pitch in Sunday’s Futures Game.

But they’re already working with a short bench after recalling both Rowan Wick and Dillon Maples to fill in for Cole Hamels and Carlos González (who has apparently cleared waivers and been outrighted to Iowa), so that could mean swapping in a position player. Like, say, slugging switch-hitter Robel Garcia.
It would also make sense to bring up someone like Duane Underwood Jr. or Alec Mills to protect against further bullpen wear and tear, then exchange either for Garcia with to games on the South Side to close the first half. One way or the other, we’ll find out soon enough.
Update: The Cubs have activated Hendricks and recalled Randy Rosario, making room by optioning Wick and Alzolay. So uh, yeah, big time.
