Cubs Option Nico Hoerner and Brad Wieck, Assign Pedro Strop and Shelby Miller, Release Cameron Maybin
The Cubs announced a flurry of moves Saturday, several of which include players expected to have an impact in Chicago this season. As reported late Friday, Nico Hoerner has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Joining him is lefty Brad Wieck, which paves the way for Rex Brothers to make the roster.
Shelby Miller being assigned to minor league camp comes as a bit of a surprise given how well he’s done to this point, though it’s probably just a matter of time before he’s back. Pedro Strop has likewise looked good lately, but both he and Trevor Megill will join Miller. Outfielder Rafael Ortega was assigned as well.
Finally, outfielder Cameron Maybin has been granted his release, bringing the Cubs’ spring roster to 31 players: 17 pitchers (two non-roster invitees), three catchers (one NRI), seven infielders (two NRIs), and four outfielders.
