Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/29/21): Cubs 10, Reds 2 – Magic Continues For Cubs in Blowout Win

The Chicago Cubs are on a roll and the magic continued today behind a solid effort from Zach Davies, who gave up just one run through five innings.

The Cubs got on the board in the 2nd inning when Willson Contreras scored on a single by Eric Sogard. Davies then helped his own cause and laid down a safety-squeeze that turned into a single and RBI on a play that should have resulted in an out but instead was a gift from the Reds defense.

Rex Brothers came on in the 6th after a Davies walk. Brothers walked two and struck out one before he was relieved by Keegan Thompson, who allowed a double by Tyler Stephenson that tied things up 2-2.

The Cubs offense responded in the bottom of the 6th inning, plating four runs off four walks and two singles. That gave the Cubs a commanding 6-2 lead.

The Cubs added another run when Rafael Ortega hit a solo shot just into the basket in right field in the 7th.  In the bottom of the 8th, the Cubs hit five consecutive singles to add on two more runs, as they run away with the game by the final score of 10-2. (Box Score)

Why the Cubs Won

Davies was great, the bullpen was good (again), and the offense took advantage of miscues, walks, and a mediocre Reds’ bullpen.

Key Moment

After the Reds tied things up in the top of the 6th, the Cubs walked four times before two singles gave the Cubs a 6-2 lead they’d extend into a laugher.

Stats That Matter

• Davis was effective and held the Reds in check: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB
• Every starter had a hit today with the exception of David Bote, who left the game early with a shoulder injury. An update on Bote is expected soon.
• The record bullpen streak finally came to an end after 38 1/3 scoreless innings, but it didn’t matter in this one as the offense seemed to take it personally and piled it on.
• The Cubs now own an 18-7 record in May and head into tonight tied for 1st place in the NL Central.

Bottom Line

Despite the scoreless streak coming to an end for the bullpen, the Cubs’ winning mojo continues to work in grand fashion as they go for their second straight sweep of an NL Central opponent tomorrow. Unfortunately, their injury mojo also still seems to be intact with the injury to Bote.
