Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/10/21, Game 2): Brewers 6, Cubs 3 (F/7) – Cubs Lose in Winkler of an Eye
After dropping the matinee portion of Tuesday’s twin bill, the Cubs took on the Brewers again in the evening at a very suddenly rainy Wrigley Field. An hour and a half rain delay interrupted the middle of the game and Milwaukee took over late for an easy victory
Both starters got wiped out by the delay and the Cubs struck first in the bullpen battle as Patrick Wisdom cranked an opposite-field solo home run deep to right field against John Curtiss in the 4th. Chicago leads tend not to be very secure with the bullpen set up as it is right now, and that was again in the case Tuesday night.
The Brewers jumped all over the combination of Dan Winkler, Kyle Ryan, and Jake Jewell to put up a six-run 5th inning. Suddenly, a 1-0 Cubs lead was a 6-1 hole they wouldn’t be able to climb out of. The home team tacked on a run via a Johneshwy Fargas infield single in the 6th and Wisdom doubled in a run in the 7th, but it was not enough as they lost 6-3. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The bullpen once again melted down as it has been doing quite often the last month. Of course, that appears to be the Cubs’ intention.
Key Moment
Fargas was able to get his glove on Jackie Bradley Jr.‘s double to right in the 5th inning but could not make the catch. If the speedy outfielder had pulled the ball in, they might’ve escaped the inning unscathed.
Stats That Matter
- Alec Mills got the first seven outs of the game and looked good. We’ll never know what he would’ve done had there been no delay.
- Rowan Wick returned after missing the entire season to this point with injury and pitched a clean inning.
- Wisdom had a walk in addition to his double and home run for a productive day.
Bottom Line
Mark this game as another effort to earn a higher draft pick. We didn’t learn much about the future from this one, other than it was nice to see Wick back on the mound. Maybe he can be a guy for 2022.
On Deck
Game three of the series is Wednesday at 7:05pm CT. Jake Arrieta takes on Corbin Burnes in a matchup airing on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
