Caleb Kilian Activated from IL, Tomás Nido Down Several Weeks After Knee Surgery
The Cubs announced Wednesday that Caleb Kilian has been activated from the 60-day IL and optioned to Triple-A Iowa, where he’s been rehabbing for the last three weeks. Kilian suffered a teres major strain during spring training and was out of action through June, but he’s now made eight appearances between Iowa and High-A South Bend. Though all of those outings have come in relief, he went three innings this past Sunday and should continue to stretch out.
Because they cleared a little space during what ended up being a really underwhelming trade deadline push, the Cubs still have a spot on the 40-man even after Kilian’s activation. They could end up with another vacancy depending on how Tomás Nido heals up, though even being at the far end of his 4-6 week recovery from a procedure on his right meniscus won’t put him at 60 days.
Either way, the Cubs have at least one spot open and have Moises Ballesteros tearing up Triple-A while Matt Shaw dominates Double-A. That makes their inactivity at the deadline all the more strange, but what do I know?
