Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/7/25): Cubs 7, Rangers 0 – Steele Outstanding as Cubs Display Speed

The Cubs were battling not only the Rangers but also the conditions at Wrigley Field Monday night with temperatures hovering around freezing. Chicago got a great effort by their starter and manufactured runs all night long to earn the victory.

Michael Busch hit a bloop double off of Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi in the 2nd inning and advanced to third on a Dansby Swanson bunt before coming home on a Miguel Amaya sacrifice fly. Jon Berti was hit by a pitch in the 3rd and proceeded to steal second and third base before beating out a throw to the plate on an Ian Happ grounder to put the North Siders on top 2-0.

Justin Steele was the sharpest he has been all season, completely stifling the Texas lineup. Busch whacked an RBI triple into the right field corner to put the Cubs in front 3-0 in the 5th inning. That was it for Eovaldi, who failed to escape that frame.

Chicago broke the game open against reliever Gerson Garabito in the 6th, scoring four runs. Happ singled home two runs, followed by RBI singles from Tucker and Seiya Suzuki to grow the lead to 7-0. Steele eventually pitched seven scoreless frames before Collin Rea handled the final two innings as the Cubs rolled to a shutout victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

Chicago’s big 6th inning was huge and gave them plenty of cushion to avoid any kind of late-game issues.

Why the Cubs Won

They put on a baserunning clinic, stealing five bases and grabbing every extra bag they could all night. Also, a very good starting pitching effort sealed the deal.

Stats That Matter

  • By far Steele’s best performance of 2025: 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 8 K, and 2 BB.
  • Busch must be used to the cold weather back home in Minnesota because he had the only two extra base hits Monday.
  • Suzuki got on base three times in this game.

Bottom Line

It was great to see the Cubs manufacture runs in a very cold environment. These are the kind of conditions that would shut them down in previous seasons, but this is a much faster and more athletic squad. Wins like this could be huge at the end of the season when the playoffs are on the line.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 6:40pm CT. Jameson Taillon is on the mound against Patrick Corbin in a matchup available on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
