Keys to Game (4/7/25): Take Advantage Of Frigid Temperatures

The Cubs play their first night game at home this season, with the red-hot Texas Rangers coming to town. Sunday’s defensive mishap by Justin Turner cost the Cubs a chance at sweeping the Padres, but vibes are still high after a solid series win. With the lineups out, it’s time for the keys to today’s game.

Put the ball in play
Nathan Eovaldi has thrown 15 innings in two games this year. He’s struck out 17 hitters while allowing just two runs. Limiting strikeouts means more balls in play, which creates opportunities for chaos. The temperature will be around 25°F by first pitch, making it one of the coldest games in Cubs history. Frigid temperatures make it hard to grip the ball. Create some errors on the field, and you’re in business.

Keep the ball in the ballpark
The long ball has been a big issue for Justin Steele, who has allowed five home runs in his first three starts. Tonight’s weather should help, with the wind blowing in at 20 miles per hour. Using this to his advantage, Steele needs to focus on keeping the ball on the ground. The Cubs have excellent defense all around, especially with Gage Workman starting at third base. Steele’s first three starts have been disappointing, but this weather could be just what he needs to get back into a groove.
