Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/9/25): Rangers 6, Cubs 2 – Seager Homers Twice as Texas Avoids Sweep

The Chicago Cubs had a chance to sweep the Rangers on a cold, cloudy day at Wrigley Field Wednesday. Unfortunately for Chicago, their offense never got going, and they dropped the final game of the series.

Texas went ahead early when Corey Seager lofted an opposite-field solo homer against starter Shōta Imanaga. Tyler Mahle did not allow any Cubs hits until Seiya Suzuki tripled in the bottom of the 4th inning. He came home to score on a single by Michael Busch to even things at 1-1.

Imanaga had a rare bad inning in the 5th when he gave up four runs, beginning with a two-run homer to Jonah Heim. Josh Jung added an RBI double, and Adolis Garcia hit an RBI single to give the Rangers a 5-3 advantage.

Seager launched a second solo shot off of Nate Pearson in the 7th to increase the lead to 6-1. Mahle completely shut down the North Siders’ lineup, and Texas would win easily 6-2 to avoid the sweep.

Key Moment

Imanaga didn’t have his best stuff on Wednesday and the Rangers made him pay for it in the 5th inning.

Why the Cubs Lost

The consistently effective bats in the Cubs’ lineup finally had a bad game.

Stats That Matter

  • Imanaga got burned by the home run ball on Wednesday: 5 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3 HR
  • Suzuki had Chicago’s only extra-base hit and two of the four total knocks

Bottom Line

The Cubs didn’t have it in this game, but they still walked away with another series win against a good team. They are in about as good of a spot as you can hope for heading into a very difficult road trip in Los Angeles and San Diego. If Craig Counsell‘s squad can navigate this next week in decent shape, they will be in a great position going forward

On Deck

The West Coast swing begins Friday against the Dodgers at 9:10pm CT. Matthew Boyd takes the mound for Chicago, facing Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a game televised on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
