Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/25/25): Cubs 4, Phillies 0 – Cubs, Rea Post Impressive Shutout at Damp Wrigley Field

The Cubs and Phillies had to wait out about a two-hour rain delay before getting their series underway at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon. When play got going, Chicago kept rolling, grabbing an early advantage and completely shutting down the Philadelphia lineup to win their third consecutive game.

The North Siders struck first against Taijuan Walker in the bottom of the 2nd when Jon Berti hit an RBI double. Nico Hoerner singled home another run in the 3rd to give his squad a 2-0 lead.

Colin Rea was sharp again and kept the Phillies quiet over five frames. Ian Happ added insurance when he doubled in a run in the 4th inning to bring the score to 3-0.

Pete Crow-Armstrong laid down a safety squeeze bunt in the 7th to score Dansby Swanson and increase the margin to 4-0. The bullpen was solid in four innings, and the Cubs sealed the shutout victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Phillies got the first two runners on base in the top of the 7th against Brad Keller to bring the tying run to the plate. Keller retired the next three hitters to escape the jam unscathed.

Why the Cubs Won

The pitching staff was excellent, putting up a shutout, and the offense did a nice job manufacturing runs with the wind blowing in hard from center.

Stats That Matter

  • Rea has stepped up nicely after being forced into the rotation by Justin Steele‘s injury: 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 7 K, 2 BB.
  • Happ stayed hot with two more hits, both doubles.
  • Seiya Suzuki had a pair of two-baggers, as well, after missing Wednesday’s game with wrist pain.
  • Berti had a couple of hits Friday and probably earned himself more starts at third base.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue to play excellent baseball against quality opponents. They are hitting and pitching very well, and some reliable options are emerging in the bullpen. They have a chance to build a lead in a very mediocre division. It’s impressive how this roster has come together.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Saturday at 3:05pm CT. Ben Brown takes the mound against Jesús Luzardo in a contest airing on Fox with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
