Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/6/25): Giants 14, Cubs 5 F/11 – Cubs Imploded in Extras After Rallying
The Cubs and Giants battled Wrigley Field Tuesday night after the home team picked up a lopsided victory on Monday night. Chicago staged a dramatic 9th inning rally to tie the game, but the Giants had a huge rally of their own to emerge victorious in extras.
Starter Colin Rea was not as sharp as he has been in his previous outings and Giants’ hitters took advantage. Heliot Ramos had an RBI single and Patrick Bailey added a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning to give the road team a 2-0 lead.
Jung Hoo Lee hit a two-run homer off of Rea in the 3rd inning to double San Francisco’s margin to 4-0. The Cubs finally broke through on veteran Justin Verlander in the bottom of the frame when Dansby Swanson singled and was plated by a home run from Miguel Amaya to cut the deficit in half.
Brett Wisely laid down a fairly awkward safety squeeze in the 4th to bring home another Giants run and make it 5-2. Jon Berti picked up an RBI infield single in the bottom of the 5th to bring the North Siders within two at 5-3.
Ryan Walker came on for the save attempt in the bottom of the 9th and walked two to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of pinch-hitter Justin Turner. Turner singled to right to cut the margin to 5-4 and Walker was pulled with runners on first and third and two outs.
Lefty Erik Miller entered to face Kyle Tucker and the Cubs outfielder smacked the first pitch he saw right back up the middle for a game-tying RBI single. Chicago could not get another run in, so the game went to extras.
The Giants busted the game wide open against Ryan Pressly in the 11th inning, scoring nine runs to end it. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs got a runner to third with one out in the 10th inning, but a Pete Crow-Armstrong strikeout and a lineout by Swanson stranded the winning run.
Why the Cubs Lost
They just couldn’t get that last hit to complete the comeback and came up short in extras.
Stats That Matter
- Rea was bound to have a shaky start, but it’s not like he was horrible: 5 IP, 5 R, 4 ER 8 H, 4 K, 2 BB.
- Swanson reached base three times Monday with two singles and a walk.
- Tucker also got on three times and continues to get big hits.
Bottom Line
A valiant comeback by the Cubs really went sideways in the 11th inning. It’s good to they have no quit even against one of the best bullpens in baseball. Tucker continues to demonstrate what an important piece he is to the roster, not just this year but going forward.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Wednesday afternoon at 1:20pm CT. Ben Brown is on the hill against Robbie Ray in a contest airing on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
