Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/13/25): Pirates 2, Cubs 1 F/10 – Hitters Fail to Produce in Extras Loss

The Cubs and Pirates got together for the second game of their series at a soggy Wrigley Field Friday afternoon. Chicago could never get their offense into gear and would eventually come up one run short in extra innings.

Both heralded starters, Cade Horton and Paul Skenes, lived up to the hype in this one with neither team crossing the plate in the first six innings. The best scoring opportunity for the North Siders was when Kyle Tucker had a double with two down in the 5th, but Ian Happ was thrown out at home trying to come in all the way around from first base.

Pittsburgh finally scratched the scoresheet against Brad Keller in the 8th when Henry Davis doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder off the bat of Oneil Cruz. The Cubs responded immediately in the bottom of the frame, putting the first two runners on base before scoring the tying run on a Dansby Swanson RBI ground out.

The game headed to extra innings and the Pirates grabbed the lead on a sacrifice fly by Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the 10th inning. Chicago did nothing in the bottom half of the frame and Pittsburgh took home the 2-1 victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had the top of their lineup hitting in the bottom of the 10th against closer David Bednar and made three consecutive outs on very weak contact.

Why the Cubs Lost

The hitters offered almost no run support, which squandered very good pitching performances.

Stats That Matter

  • This was undoubtedly Horton’s best performance in the majors: 5.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB.
  • Seiya Suzuki had two hits but came up empty twice with runners in scoring position.

Bottom Line

Definitely a disappointing outcome for Chicago after forcing Skenes to leave pretty early Friday. The offense has not been as good at home, possibly because of the persistently nasty weather conditions that were bad again in this game. Horton is progressing nicely, which is a great sign for the second half of the season.

On Deck

The two sides meet again Saturday at 1:20pm CT. Matthew Boyd is on the mound against Mike Burrows in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with the radio feed on 670 The Score.
