Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/22/25): Mariners 14, Cubs 6 – M’s Mash at Wrigley

The Cubs and Mariners met in the deciding game of their series at a hot and windy Wrigley Field Sunday afternoon. Chicago had an all-around bad pitching performance and went down to a hefty defeat.

Cal Raleigh struck again in the top of the 1st with a two-run homer off Colin Rea to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. Seiya Suzuki got one back against Logan Gilbert with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame.

Dominic Canzone hit one out in the 2nd and Donovan Solano went deep in the 4th to make it 4-1. Randy Arozarena added an RBI single in the 5th to give the M’s a 5-1 advantage.

The Cubs made a big push in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs to get within 5-4. Reese McGuire blasted a solo shot to dead center and Suzuki hit his second of the day, a two-run jack to left.

That was as close as Chicago would get, however, with Seattle scoring four runs in the next two innings. Canzone and Solano each had their second dingers as the road team went on top 9-4.

Kyle Tucker got ahold of one in the bottom of the 7th for another two-run homer to cut the North Siders’ deficit to 9-6. Nate Pearson made what was probably his last appearance for Chicago, giving up five runs in the 8th inning and the Mariners eventually won 14-6. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs needed a shutdown inning after getting within 5-4, but they couldn’t get it and never really threatened again.

Why the Cubs Lost

The entire pitching staff got plastered and it gave them no chance to win Sunday.

Stats That Matter

  • Rea continued to struggle in this game: 5.1 IP, 7 R, 11 H, 2 K, 1 BB.
  • Suzuki had been kind of cold, so it’s good to see him have a big game.
  • Tucker is starting to find his power stroke, which is very promising.

Bottom Line

This is a dangerous time for Chicago, with a difficult road trip to St. Louis and Houston coming up. They are going to have to play better than they have been over the past three weeks. If they don’t, the NL Central race might get a lot closer than it has been.

On Deck

The Cubs’ aforementioned series against the Cardinals gets underway Monday at 6:45pm CT. Ben Brown goes against Matthew Liberatore in a contest broadcast on Marquee with the radio feed on 670 The Score.
