Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/20/25): Crochet Stitches W as Cubs Bullpen Falters
I’ll be honest, I was only able to follow this one remotely because my son’s 16U team made an improbable run by winning three bracket games to advance to a championship game that’s about to start. But since the Cubs lost, I’m guessing not many of you will mind a half-assed recap.
The bullpen flubbed this one, but scoring only one run makes it pretty tough to win.
Key Moment
Ryan Pressly came on in relief of Caleb Thielbar in the 7th and promptly walked the leadoff hitter before giving up a two-run shot to Wilyer Abreu. That’s all the Red Sox needed, though they tacked on four more.
Why the Cubs Lost
See above.
Stats That Matter
- Cade Horton went 5.2 scoreless with two hits allowed
- Pete Crow-Armstrong had two doubles, the Cubs’ only extra-base hits
Bottom Line
You can’t be mad about taking two of three from what had been MLB’s hottest team, but this one was tough with the Brewers now being the hottest. They’re tied 4-4 in LA as I publish this.
On Deck
The Cubs have yet another AL opponent as they host the Royals. Righty reliever Ryan Brasier gets the start in a game that starts at 7:05pm CT.
