Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/27/25): Cubs 5, White Sox 4 – Cubs Just Outlast Sloppy Sox
The Cubs and White Sox battled in the deciding game of their series at Rate Field Sunday afternoon. The North Siders went ahead early before having to hold on and came out on top thanks to a very strange play late in the game.
The Cubs grabbed the lead against opener Grant Taylor when Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a perfectly placed grounder down the third base line for a two-run double that made it 2-0 in the top of the 1st. Ben Brown allowed a home run to Andrew Benintendi in the bottom of the inning, but the big righty did a great job from there on out by going five frames and giving up just the one run.
The North Siders rallied for two runs against Sean Burke in the top of the 6th with a Nico Hoerner single and an RBI double by Matt Shaw that increased the margin to 4-1. The road team got another run on a bizarre play in the 8th when Ian Happ collided with White Sox third baseman Colson Montgomery during a rundown between third and home and was called safe due to fielder’s interference.
That insurance turned out to be critical when Benintendi blasted a three-run homer against Ryan Brasier in the bottom of the frame that got the South Siders within 5-4. Manager Craig Counsell then called on closer Daniel Palencia, who went on to collect the final four outs and secure the victory for the Cubs. (Box score)
Key Moment
The inexperience of the rookie third baseman Montgomery took what should have been a routine out and turned it into the deciding run. Earlier, Hoerner also allowed a pop-up to drop on the infield fly rule and tricked the runner at second to break for third in order to gun him down for a double play. Those two mental mistakes made all the difference in this one.
Why the Cubs Won
They took advantage of their opponents’ sloppy play, and that was just enough to grab a win.
Stats That Matter
- An encouraging outing for Brown after a lot of struggles: 5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB.
- Hoerner got on base three times and saw a ton of pitches.
- Kyle Tucker also reached three times and continues to show a good eye at the plate.
- PCA continues to get extra-base hits with two doubles.
Bottom Line
The Cubs did exactly what they needed to do in the series and took two out of three. They even gained a game on the Brewers and are tied with them heading into the critical series this week. They have managed to go 13-8 so far in July, and reinforcements should be on the way ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. Counsell’s squad is well-positioned going into the final two months of the season.
On Deck
That critical series in Milwaukee begins Monday at 6:40pm CT. Matthew Boyd takes the mound against rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski in a game broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
