Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/6/25): Nationals 2, Cubs 1 – Seven Walks Wasted in Loss

The Cubs and Nationals played the second game of their series on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Chicago had more issues generating offense and came up on the wrong end of a low-scoring affair.

Washington jumped on starter Matthew Boyd in the opening inning with four total hits, including an RBI single by Jorge Alfaro that gave them a 1-0 advantage. The North Siders did their only damage against Brad Lord in the bottom of the 2nd when Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled and eventually scored the tying run on a Carson Kelly groundout.

The Nats went back ahead in the top of the 4th when Daylen Lile blasted a solo home run off of Boyd to make it a 2-1 game. The Cubs did almost nothing the entire afternoon despite collecting seven walks, and Washington closer Cole Henry saved the game with minimal drama as the road team earned the one-run victory. Key Moment

Chicago grounded into three double plays on Saturday to wipe out any offensive momentum they attempted to get going.

Why the Cubs Lost

The pitching did more than enough to win, they just got absolutely no support from the lineup.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd had a shaky start but was more than adequate after that: 7 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 3 K, 0 BB.
  • PCA got on base twice but had to leave the game after fouling a ball off his knee.

Bottom Line

The Cubs’ inconsistent offense has to be better if they’re going to make any noise in October. Getting Kyle Tucker back would obviously help, but they just need all of their big hitters to recapture even part of the success they had in the first half. Performances like Saturday are just not going to cut it in the playoffs.

On Deck

The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon at 1:20pm CT. Chicago is using Drew Pomeranz as an opener against Andrew Alvarez in a game broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
