Watch: Cubs Honor Anthony Rizzo with Tribute Video

Anthony Rizzo officially retired Saturday as a Chicago Cub, which is as it should be. He and his family were joined by several luminaries — including, but not limited to, Eddie Vedder, Chris Chelios, and Cindy Crawford — on the field as the crowd feted the iconic first baseman. In a touching full-circle moment, Rizzo even carried his infant son out to first base.

Rizzo had been staying in shape at his home in South Florida just in case a sweetheart offer came around, but he was pretty certain his playing days were over. When he found out his wife, Emily, was pregnant, the decision became clearer.

“That made it so much easier,” Rizzo told Marquee Sports Network. “I gave everything I had on the field and off the field. So when the right opportunities didn’t arise, and we had the baby, just getting to spend so much more time at home and have this summer off, it’s been amazing, and it just all came naturally.”

The newest Cubs ambassador kicked off his role by sitting out in the left field bleachers, where he nearly caught Moisés Ballesteros‘s first career homer. Before taking his seat, however, the Cubs honored No. 44 with a tribute video.
