Kyle Tucker Addresses Upcoming Free Agency, Wishes Luck to Teammates

The offseason may not be officially underway just yet, but it’s now a hot topic after the Cubs were eliminated from playoff contention Saturday in Milwaukee. Reporters made sure to ask Kyle Tucker about it after the game, as the outfielder/designated hitter is set to become a free agent once the offseason begins.

“We’ll see what happens,” Tucker said. “I don’t know what the future is gonna hold. If not, it’s been an honor playing with all these guys, and wish everyone the best of luck, whether it’s playing next year or not with them.”

The Cubs traded for Tucker last December in a move that proved they were setting themselves up to be a contender in 2025. Trading away a top prospect like Cam Smith — not to mention the other pieces in the deal — for someone of Tucker’s caliber was not something we had seen Jed Hoyer do before, but his aggressiveness gave the team someone to build around for his lone season with the ballclub.

Due to his injury history and poor performance in the second half of this season, Tucker’s contract value has likely plummeted from its peak around the middle of the summer months. Nonetheless, the Cubs’ odds of retaining the would-be superstar, if they are even seriously interested in doing so, are quite slim.
