Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/4/25): Brewers 4, Cubs 0 – Shōta Hurt in Shutout Loss
The Cubs came up short in their attempt to sweep the Brewers at American Family Field Sunday afternoon. What was a pitcher’s duel came apart for Chicago after ace Shōta Imanaga had to leave the game with a left hamstring strain in the 6th inning.
Imanaga and Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta were very sharp Sunday and neither team could score through the first five frames. Then the Cubs lefty pulled up limping while trying to cover first on a failed double play and had to exit with two on and two out.
Julian Merryweather came on in relief and immediately uncorked a wild pitch to give the Brewers the lead. Daz Cameron followed with an RBI single and Caleb Durbin whacked a two-run double to give the home team a 4-0 advantage.
The Cubs offense just could not get anything going the whole game on Sunday and went down to defeat by that same margin. (Box score)
Key Moment
Merryweather had to come in to a jam after the injury to Imanaga and just did not have it. That was the only scoring all game on Sunday.
Why the Cubs Lost
This was a rare time in 2025 when the lineup did basically nothing.
Stats That Matter
- Imanaga was good prior to the injury, but he may be out for an extended period: 5.2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 K, 1 BB.
- Kyle Tucker had two of the Cubs’ five hits.
Bottom Line
The outcome of this game does not mean much. The biggest issue for the Cubs is the status of Imanaga, who could miss several weeks even if it’s just a mild strain. Chicago has already had its starting pitching depth taxed by the loss of Justin Steele and Javier Assad, so this is unwelcome news. It’s a good thing the schedule lightens up a bit after this week, but this makes things more difficult going forward.
On Deck
The Cubs return home for a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants starting Monday at 6:40pm CT. Matthew Boyd faces off against Landen Roupp in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
