Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/25/25): Cubs 11, Reds 8 – The Reese McGuire Game
The Cubs and Reds met for the rubber match of their series at the Great American Ball Park onSunday afternoon. The North Siders stumbled early again, but the bats came to life in the late innings to take the game and series in impressive fashion.
Pete Crow-Armstrong singled home a pair of runners against Nick Lodolo in the top of the 1st to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. Ben Brown ran into major problem in the bottom of the frame after he walked the first two batters. Austin Hays, Jose Trevino, and Will Benson each had RBI singles, followed by a wild pitch to give Cincinnati a 4-2 advantage.
Reese McGuire cut the deficit in half with a home run in his first career Cubs at-bat in the 2nd. The Reds had their second four-run inning against Brown in the 5th, beginning with a single from Elly De La Cruz. Hays followed with a two-run triple and Trevino doubled to make it 8-3.
The North Siders continued to fight and started to rally in the 6th inning with Michael Busch scoring on a wild pitch. Nico Hoerner doubled home two runners off Graham Ashcraft in the 7th and Busch followed with a base hit to score him and bring the margin to just 8-7.
The Cubs completed the comeback against Taylor Rogers in the top of the 8th, starting with McGuire’s second solo to even the score. The next two runners got on base and Luis Mey came on to face Seiya Suzuki, who blasted the game-winning three-run homer to left field that made it 11-8.
Daniel Palencia sealed the triumph with a save and Chicago took another series victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
The three-run 7th inning was what got the Cubs into the game and all the damage was done with two outs.
Why the Cubs Won
The hitters went off for crooked numbers at the end of the game to make up for a bad starting pitching effort.
Stats That Matter
- Brown is really scuffling right now but his teammates bailed him out: 4.2 IP, 8 R, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB.
- McGuire was just the third player ever to hit two home runs in his first Cubs game.
- Suzuki was just a triple short of the cycle and has 49 RBI this season.
Bottom Line
Chicago took what could have been a three-game sweep and turned it into a series win thanks to a truly dynamic offense. It would be a lot easier if they didn’t fall into a big hole every game, but Craig Counsell‘s squad is never really out of as long as there are still innings to play.
On Deck
The Cubs head home for a Memorial Day matchup with the horrible Rockies at 1:20pm CT. Jameson Taillon makes the start against Carson Palmquist in a game broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
