Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/28/25): Brewers 8, Cubs 4 – Boyd Wild in Loss
The Cubs and Brewers began their big series at American Family Field Monday night. Chicago surrendered an early lead and would go on to lose, but it became secondary after word of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg‘s passing came during the game.
The North Siders loaded the bases against Milwaukee phenom Jacob Misiorowski with nobody out in the top of the 1st inning. A wild pitch and a throwing error by Misiorowski on an Ian Happ infield single gave the road team a 3-0 advantage.
Matthew Boyd was fighting control issues from the start on Monday and the Brewers finally made him pay for it in the bottom of the 3rd with four runs to move on top. Christian Yelich had an RBI double, Isaac Collins hit a two-run single to tie it, and Brice Turang had the go-ahead sacrifice fly that made it 4-3.
Boyd gave up a solo shot to Andrew Vaughn in the 5th and Ryan Pressly surrendered another to Sal Frelick in the 6th to increase the Milwaukee margin to 6-3. Kyle Tucker got one of them back on an RBI single in the 7th, but a two-run homer by Yelich in the bottom of the frame erased that and the final would be 8-4. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Brewers had two men on base in each of the first three innings, which is something you can’t get away with against a good team. That was the case again Monday in the 3rd.
Why the Cubs Lost
They did almost nothing offensively outside of the 1st inning and didn’t get quality starting pitching.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd was uncharacteristically wild in this one and it really cost him: 5 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 2 K, 5 BB.
- Michael Busch had two singles and a walk when nobody else was doing much of anything.
Bottom Line
Obviously, the outcome on Monday takes a backseat to the news about Ryno. Condolences to his friends and family. Truly one of the greats and a real icon for Cubs fans everywhere. Rest in peace, Number 23.
On Deck
Chicago tries to bounce back in game two of the series Tuesday at 6:40pm CT. Colin Rea is on the hill against Quinn Priester in a contest airing on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
