Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/29/25): Brewers 9, Cubs 3 – Vaughn Vanquishes Cubs
The Cubs and Brewers met in the second game of three at a warm American Family Field on Tuesday night. Chicago played poorly for a second consecutive contest and Milwaukee won comfortably to take the series.
The North Siders scored first against Quinn Priester on an RBI groundout by Dansby Swanson in the top of the 2nd. The Brewers took the lead on Colin Rea via a pair of sacrifice flies by Anthony Seigler (2nd inning) and Andrew Vaughn (3rd inning).
Milwaukee started to break the game open with three runs in the 5th inning. William Contreras doubled, then an uncharacteristic drop by Pete Crow-Armstrong set up two more tallies to make it 5-1. Nico Hoerner gave the Cubs a glimmer of hope on a solo homer in the 6th to reduce the margin to 5-2.
The apparently unstoppable Vaughn emphatically ended the game with a grand slam of Ryan Pressly in the bottom of the frame to put the Brew Crew ahead 9-2. Chicago would add one more run and lose 9-3. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs had runners in scoring position repeatedly throughout the first six innings and failed to come through. The Brewers had no such issues with men on base.
Why the Cubs Lost
The pitching staff was less than good again and the offense failed to come through in key spots.
Stats That Matter
- Rea was under pressure all night long and eventually ran out of gas: 4 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 2 K, 1 BB.
- Hoerner had three hits and was the offensive bright spot on Tuesday.
Bottom Line
The Brewers are better than the Cubs right now, and that might not change without some pitching help at the trade deadline. It’s important that Chicago avoids the sweep, as being one game back is much better than being three back.
On Deck
The Cubs try to salvage the final game of the series Wednesday afternoon at 1:10pm CT. Shōta Imanaga is back on the mound after a bad start against the White Sox, taking on Freddy Peralta in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
