Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/27/25): Giants 12, Cubs 3 – Rea Rocked in Rout

The Cubs and Giants played the second game of their series at Oracle Park on a cool Wednesday night. Chicago failed to take advantage of numerous early scoring opportunities and the home team exploded in the middle innings to win going away.

Rafael Devers began what would be a huge night with a solo home run against Colin Rea that put San Francisco on top 1-0 in the 1st inning. The North Siders threatened often against lefty starter Carson Whisenhunt but only broke through on a majestic three-run homer by Nico Hoerner that gave them a 3-1 lead in the 2nd.

Rea had more trouble with Devers in the 3rd, giving up an RBI ground-rule double to the big first baseman that was followed by a pair of sacrifice flies to give the Giants a 4-3 edge. The wheels completely fell off for Chicago in the 5th with three more runs coming home, including one that scored after Kyle Tucker‘s throw from right field bounced off of Matt Chapman‘s helmet at first base. The night mercifully ended for the Cubs starter that inning with the score 7-3.

Devers put the icing on the cake with a three-run homer off of reliever Taylor Rogers in the 6th inning that made it 10-3. The Giants tacked on a couple more tallies and were victorious by a score of 12-3. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had the bases loaded with one out in the 5th inning, trailing 4-3. Justin Turner, hitting forth with a left-handed starter on the mound, hit a ground ball off the pitcher’s glove that deflected to shortstop to begin an inning-ending double play. It was a slow-developing play, but Turner’s lack of speed made it an easy twin killing.

Why the Cubs Lost

There were some missed scoring chances, but the main culprit was a bad starting pitching effort that buried them.

Stats That Matter

  • Rea got shelled on Wednesday: 4.2 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 2 BB.
  • Hoerner reached base three times with a hit by pitch and a single in addition to the homer.

Bottom Line

The Cubs are having a hard time against the Giants and continue to struggle with runners in scoring position. Turner is not nearly productive enough to do that at this point in his career and can’t be batting cleanup, nor should Carson Kelly — who also had a GIDP with the bases loaded and one out — be batting fifth. Chicago has been good at avoiding sweeps this season, so perhaps they can salvage this series as well.

On Deck

The Cubs attempt to prevent the aforementioned sweep Thursday afternoon at 2:45pm CT. Shōta Imanaga faces off against Logan Webb in a game available on Marquee and 670 The Score.
